Statue Gilding

The intention of my website is to have an avenue to show my paintings to those who are inquiring about them, but I thought it would be nice to show pictures of some of the statue gilding I have done for the Sangdo Palri Temple of Wisdom and Compassion over the past few years.

I learned how to paint statue faces while I was studying Thangka Painting at Tsering Art School…. but I didn’t have experience applying gold leaf, at all. I consulted a few professionals and used a few of my own small statues as tests, and began to gild statues. Working with gold leaf is amazing… the air fills with the tiniest specks of gold, which then settle into the pores on the body. The hair gets filled with gold dust as well. Everything sparkles and shines.

Above is a picture of the 1000 armed, 11 headed Chenrezi statue. Working on this was definitely one of the most enjoyable things I have ever done. Below is a photo gallery of many “work in progress” images.
